The existing 71JM extract fans had been operating at the Emirates Stadium HUB Sports Hall since 2014. Woods was approached to provide a replacement solution for the ageing equipment.
A direct like-for-like replacement using six-pole motors was considered. However, these motors were subject to an extended lead time, while the available option required approximately twice the motor power of the existing fans.
The replacement equipment needed to maintain the required ventilation performance, work with the existing inverter controls and minimise delays to the project.
After reviewing the installation and operating requirements, Woods proposed an alternative solution using IE2 four-pole motors.
Because the fans are controlled through inverters, their speed can be adjusted and reduced to match the required operating point within the sports hall. This allowed the replacement fans to provide the necessary ventilation performance without requiring a direct six-pole motor replacement.
Selecting the four-pole solution also enabled Woods to offer a significantly more competitive lead time. The proposal provided a practical and cost-effective route to replacing the ageing equipment while minimising delays to the project.
The replacement 71JM fans were supplied ready for integration with the existing inverter controls, providing a reliable and controllable extract ventilation solution for the HUB Sports Hall.
By considering how the fans operated as part of the wider control system, Woods was able to specify a readily available motor solution and use the existing inverters to achieve the required fan duty.
This maintained the performance needed within the sports hall while improving equipment availability and avoiding the higher motor power associated with the available six-pole alternative.
