Woods Air Movement Industrial Roof Extractor Fans

Effective and reliable, the Woods Air Movement range of weatherproof commercial roof fans are a popular solution for the removal of gas, vapour, hot air and particles within an industrial setting.

WHAT IS A ROOF FAN?

A roof fan is either an axial fan or centrifugal blower contained within a roof-mounted unit in either a vertical or horizontal discharge configuration. They can be used to maintain a comfortable working environment or to provide critical smoke extraction in the event of an emergency.

Roof fans provide a simple way to ventilate large areas and can be used with ducting or without. Typically, axial fans provide higher volumes, but lower static pressure so are used for ductless ventilation; centrifugal fans are used to generate the higher pressures that ducting systems require.

Roof fans are mainly used on commercial and industrial buildings such as shopping centres, warehouses, and factories.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROOF FAN?

Woods Air Movement offers the following centrifugal roof fan ranges:

  • Horizontal discharge standard temperature roof units designed for general ventilation.
  • Vertical discharge standard temperature roof units designed for general ventilation.
  • High Temperature vertical discharge roof units designed for elevated ambient temperatures operating up to 120°C. Ideal for commercial kitchen extract with the motor out of the air stream.
  • High Temperature Smoke Extract roof units with vertical discharge, rated for 400°C for 2 hours to allow safe evacuation and to aid emergency services.

They vary in performance and size to suit your particular requirements. In general, vertical jet roof units are mainly designed and used for exhausting hotter air (and sometimes hot smoke if the unit is designed for a fire safety application. The primary objective is to get the hot air/hot smoke away from the building as quickly as possible, to reduce potential damage to the building fabric, whilst also improving visibility for those evacuating the building and for fire fighters.

Choosing the right Roof Fan

Both the horizontal and vertical format products can be installed onto either a flat or pitched (angled) roof. Our horizontal (side discharge) variant is a more cost effective solution than the vertical discharge option, as the latter has a more complex backdraft shutter and water ingress mitigation measures than the horizontal version, so if the extract air is relatively cool (< +70°C) then the horizontal variant is the best option most of the time.

The only slight disadvantage to the horizontal (side) discharge design is that it delivers a slightly lower air volume extract performance, because the air flow is being forced to turn through 90° inside the unit.
