Jet Fans

Jet fans allow you build a duct-free ventilation system by positioning series of strategically placed fans, to control and distribute air around an enclosed area, such as an underground carpark or tunnel. Sensors placed at optimum points around the space to allow the control system to regulate which fans operate to dilute or extract contaminated air. A Jet fan system’s flexibility offers the ultimate in safety, economy and efficiency.

WHAT IS A JET FAN?

A Jet fan is designed to move a large volume of air via the development of thrust. This is achieved by the creation of a concentrated high velocity jet stream, which induces air movement and is based on a physical law first established by Bernoulli. They offer a pollution control solution that directs air to a common exhaust point (e.g. extract fan, exit ramp, vent etc) and have been globally accepted as a cost-effective alternative to traditional ducted ventilation for years.

There are two types; Axial and Centrifugal. They are also referred to as Axial Impulse Fans, Jet Thrust Fans and Induction Thrust Fans (ITF). The primary difference between the two is the plume they induce.

Axial Jet Fans create a narrow, horizontal plume that is good for inducing air movement over car parking spaces, driving lanes and in tunnels.

Centrifugal Jet Fans provide a wider plume with inclination. This inclination helps avoid beams and obstructions. Their low profile makes them more versatile where space is limited but they are also suitable for high-ceiling car parks, as the tilted plume provides air movement closer to the ground even when installed higher up.

When installed as a system, the fans work together, pushing air from one area to the next and so on, until it reaches either the outside or an exhaust point. A Jet fan ventilation system is designed to achieve three distinct objectives:

1 - PROVIDE EMERGENCY SMOKE CONTROL

In the event of a fire, selective operation of the fans makes it possible to control the flow of smoke, extracting it - and other toxic fumes - quickly, allowing valuable time for evacuation and making it easier for firefighters to deal with the blaze.

2 – PREVENT THE BUILD UP OF HARMFUL EMISSIONS

Safe, reliable, and efficient, they provide excellent day-to-day ventilation for environments where circulating fresh air is a challenge – including underground car parks and garages, loading bays, tunnels and service roads. They control the direction of the airflow within the environment, ensuring there are no stagnant areas. Pollution ventilation can be designed on a traditional volumetric air change rate, or by using CO, LPG and NOx sensor monitoring systems.

3 - REMOVE THE NEED FOR SPACE- AND ENERGY-CONSUMING DUCTING

Jet Fans are the smart solution to ventilation, eliminating the need for costly, unsightly and sometimes complicated ductwork. No ductwork means more clearance overhead, allowing taller vehicles (and people) to move around safely. It also reduces maintenance costs, as there are no ducts to inspect, clean or replace.

WHY CHOOSE A WOODS JET FAN SYSTEM?

Although Jet fans are still treated as a new technology within the UK, Woods Air Movement has been building them for use across the globe for over 20 years. Using the latest CFD technology to simulate air movement within an enclosed space, our engineers can create a system to suit any environment.

We offer a range of standard fans ideal for ventilating enclosed spaces and can design and build large-scale fans to suit road and metro tunnels, car parks and garages. To find out more get in touch today.
