Putting Woods Fans to the Test

We recently ran 24-hour tests of large metro fans headed for California.

We understand the importance of ensuring fan durability and performance which is why we validate our structural designs with physical tests in our R&D laboratory. We measure the actual operating stresses using strain gauges applied to the high stress locations that have been highlighted by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Our laboratory engineers map the impeller's structural response across its entire operating characteristic. Armed with this level of detail our design engineers are then able to qualify the impeller for the intended applications.

State-of-the-Art R&D Laboratories

Located in the USA, our laboratories are equipped to accurately determine fan performance. Our labs perform a wide variety of tests on our new products, and we also conduct comprehensive tests on bespoke fans designed and built for specific customer projects. We provide testing and certifications to ISO, EN, BS, IEC standards, including specific aerodynamic, acoustic, vibration, thrust, and high-temperature testing as required.

A large axial fan in the US factory ready for despatch

A 24-hour marathon

We recently built a number of 8.2ft (2.5m) Reversible Axial Fans to provide general ventilation and emergency smoke extraction for a new underground metro station in California. The 350HP fans are capable of achieving a duty point of 250,000 cfm (cubic feet per minute) @ 5.92 in.w.g (static pressure) and will cope with high temperatures of 482° for 90 minutes in the event of an emergency.

To be absolutely sure that the fans will cope with the challenging environment, each one underwent rigorous testing, running for 12 hours continuously in one direction before being sent into reverse for another 12 hours. Every hour we monitored:

  • Ambient temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Absolute barometric pressure, in inches of mercury
  • Motor winding temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Motor bearing temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit
  • Motor bearing vibration levels, in inches per second
  • Motor speed, in revolutions per minute

A virtual video link showing the product in operation, data acquisition system and the instrumentation showing a live feed allowed the clients to see the results for themselves in real time.

Needless to say, the fans passed with flying colors and were dispatched to the site.
